Description
For auction is a genuine Asmat, hand carved wooden warrior shield. It originates from Buepis village, Causarina Coast, Irian Jaya, Indonesia. I acquired this fine specimen in the late 1980's. It stands 48 inches tall, has seven sago leaf fiber strands, artistic use of lime, red ocher, and charcoal exemplifies Asmat shield craftsmanship from this south coast region. This shield has no broken or missing parts, is solid with carved warrior's handle on reverse side. The famous phalic motif is plainly obvious in looking at the long necked figure perched atop the shield. For further information I kindly refer you to Asmat Art: Woodcarvings of Southwest New Guinea, 1993, Dirk A. M. Smidt, Ed. Published by Periplus Editions and the Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde, Leiden. Also please see Julie Campbell's work Irian Jaya, 1991, Tynron Press, Scotland. The Asmat warriors pictured is from Asmat, Menyingkap Budaya Suku Pedalaman Irian Jaya, by Dea Sudarman, 1984, pp 67. I will only accept Paypal or bank transfer for payment on this item. Shipping to lower 48 is $75, elsewhere to be determined, buyer to pay shipping costs. I have or will have other object of art, paintings, sculpture, books of cultural / antiquarian interest. Please check my other listings. Thanks for viewing this auction.
