Description
~ Voodoo Priestess Estate ~ 1888 LiDiex's B. Ultungin, Werehyena's Lizardite Altar Fetish ~!~ This is another long listing with an abundant text and 40 photographs, so please sit back & give them time to load. If you have come this far we are sure you will find it is worth the wait. Just over six & half years ago we were called to do an estate that had been closed up for seventeen years! Voodoo Estate! This type of call usually gets us excited as they are a treasure trove. Located here in Florida, there was no electricity or running water so we rigged our own lighting & in we went. If you have ever seen the Adams Family you will have some idea as to what we were greeted with! Then the attorney handling the liquidation gave us some background. The home had belonged to an alleged powerful Voodoo Priestess/JooJoo Exorcist, grand daughter of a Marie Laveau, & favored daughter of a Marie Glapion. This did not have much impact on us other than to cause an uneasy feeling when in the house & we declined to spend the night while inventorying, deciding to stay in a hotel to return during daylight. Our research has shown that this woman was what she claimed & was indeed descended from a long line of well known Vodoun family originating in New Orleans in the early 1800's. We were pretty unnerved by this until we discovered they were also devout Catholics! Although I have to admit this was unlike any Catholic home I have ever been in & some of the items found inside were a little more than unnerving. There was no feeling of dread or unwelcome in the home, however there was quite a bit of contraband & other items we can not sell here on ebay. This is one of a few pieces from this estate we will be listing this week, so check our other items! We will, upon the winning bidder's request, issue a named Letter of Authenticity with each piece from this estate, complying with the terms set forth to us by the estate's attorney. Back To The Auction Found on the Main LiDiex Altar, this carving is attributed as "B. Ultungin's Werehyeana Lizardite Fetish". Their journals attribute it as, "the parting gift from B. Ultungin to LiDiex." 1888 LiDiex The research involved in this estate provides a continuous adventure. The heir of this statue, a man known only as "LiDiex", was a 4th. generation descendent of the original Man Known Only As "LiDiex", the survivor & saboteur of the slave Ship Henrietta Marie in 1701, who found his way to New Orleans to meet with the young Grandmother of our priestess, Marie Laveau. The original LiDiex was a wood carver as were most of his descendants. This is another case of the multi-generational relationships we have encountered with this family as the Lidiex all had a strong association with these women. He was the least mentioned of the LiDiex in her journals, yet he kept a suite of rooms with her from the time of his sixteenth birthday. And, in our opinion, he was or is, one of her more interesting associates Apparently he would leave for up to a decade at a time before returning, shutting himself in her estate for lengthy periods before leaving again. He is attributed with the design & consecration of the "Resurrection Skull Altar" & most of the ceremonial spells used with it. Her journals & those of a number of her live in practitioner followers, most notably the LiDiex, tell of this altar being used in ritual resurrection ceremonies. There are some pretty fantastic tales of animating inanimate objects, most notably a number of articulated skulls using specific minerals, potions, elixirs, reptiles, chants & incantations. But most of this story will have to wait for the book. He is described in her journals as being "in excess of six feet of sinewy muscle, deceptively strong, easily matching two of his size in their grappling." & "extensively, shaved, tattooed and pierced." in addition to "shown to be capable of high magic without devices." Both their journals claim his ability to heal wounds, shape shift, travel through time & space, telepath & create life with the power of his thought. They also corroborate the sharing of identities with a number of other LiDiex, "being a master of disguise and misdirection, often with his mere thought" according to these entries. This gave these men the ability to appear in two places at once, an old family ploy that was apparently often used by their Mistresses. It is this LiDiex who is attributed with making her introduction to Alexandra David Neel & his journals tell of numerous meetings & short adventures with her. Claiming at the age of twenty four to have met Neel for the second time in the company of Prince Sidkeong of Sikkim & of being her teacher of the Tibetan language having already spent six years with the Great Hermit as apprentice. Much is already written on these subjects, so there is no need to elaborate here in this already overly long listing, but we wholeheartedly recommend a cursory search for some very interesting reading. ~!~ B. Ultungin & the Lizardite We researched this as a work of art, most likely African & maker marked. Researching "B. Ultungin" as an artist led to a dead end so we proceeded to research the stone it was carved from. It was determined to be Lizardite, one of twenty varieties of Serpentine & assuredly of African origin. That was six years ago & fortunately we did not sell it. In 2004 we started researching this LiDiex's journals & it was here we found our first reference to "B. Ultungin" as, "Met in Yubuto" which was dated 1904. This was a relationship that would last for the next six decades. He is named as "a Margi Magi, shapeshifter and Hyena Doubler" in the 164 pages of hand written notes concerning him. Apparently, when met, this pair scoured the African continent for specific gemstones, minerals & talisman using LiDiex's alleged ability to essentially transport himself & a guest or two to "sites to harvest" as it in mentioned in a few entries. This statue/fetish is alleged to have been cut from such a sixty six pound specimen during a ritual carving that they claimed lasted sixty two hours! Carved as a ritual, blood fed fetish to be much more than a work of art. These entries allege B. Ultungin to be his assumed name & a play on the word bultungin which translates into "I change myself into a hyena". From these entries it is apparent he & those of his village displayed an uncanny control over many animals, most notably the spotted hyena. They claim that through fetish such as this statue they could take control of the animal, forcing it to shapeshift into a werehyena under their control. Such a ritual is documented as having taken place in the Paris Zoo in 1938. Done during the full moon he claims they took two of these fetish to the Hyena exhibit to create a pair of these monsters which they proceeded to task with a vengeance murder. "By our will the creatures returned from their successful mission to put themselves away for their sleep transition", describes their return & transformation back to animal form, their packing up & leaving the zoo before dawn. There is a tremendous amount of ancient & modern folklore concerning this phenomenon, again, far to much to place in this limited text. It is a worthwhile & fascinating multi-cultural research if such things interest you. It did us, so much so that armed with it & what was gleaned from the journals, three unnamed parties decided to duplicate the zoo scenario to some extent. No details will be given for obvious reasons but it was not completed before the trio concluded by their observations, "it works!" Specific instructions will be provided to the winning bidder at their request. They claim there are key elements in the carving to depict to the practitioner the intent of this fetish, such as the scrotal sack, which is used in it's ceremony. They claim "the male does not display this vulnerability in nature, it is there for our control." It is the only one of the original four made that were found. The remaining three they claim had to be destroyed during use as they had lost control of the werehyena & only through destruction of the fetish would it return to animal form. B. Ultungin is alleged to have met his demise in 1962 during her artifact hunt of Brazil. His cremated remains being returned to her estate. Real or imagined, we certainly understand why she & her associates were as feared & respected as they were. There is no excuse for the behavior of the above mentioned three. ~!~ The Statue Museum quality Lizardite hyena statue. Marked "B. Ultungin" on the base. It measures approximately 13 1/2" in height x 17" in length x 41/2" in width & weighs 28 pounds & 10 ounces. It is certainly an unusual statue with an extraordinary provenance that is much nicer than the photographs are able to depict. ~!~ We have been contacted & visited by a number of people who were interested in the items from this estate since our first batch was listed. Among the buyers have been known psychics & practitioners. More than one, after adorning themselves or handling their purchase, stated "this is a woman of power!" Many of our customers, after receiving items from this estate have reported dream contacts & other unexplained phenomenon. Unusual, authentic Voodoo Priestess Estate piece & at a bargain price! This is truly a rare opportunity to own anything with attributes to this estate. The majority of this estate is now gone. 90% of what we had left, & it was considerable, has been split up & sold to a couple of private, foreign collector practitioners & will never be available to the public again. We made the decision to do this as we have had some pretty strange visits from even stranger individuals & there have been enough unexplained phenomenon going on in the warehouse where her things were kept that many of our employees refused to go in there. We have made the bidders identities Private for this auction & will continue to do so. The pieces offered & sold here on ebay are some of the few remaining pieces that will ever be offered to the public anywhere. Nice addition to any collection, wardrobe or decor, displays really well. Really doesn't get any better than this. It is what it is, so let's have an auction. There are 40 pictures, so please give them time to load, & enjoy the listing.
