luvpng Store CANOE SPLASHBOARD MASK, MIDDLE SEPIK PNG-NO RESERVE This is a classic Iatmul Splashboard Mask from the Middle Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. These masks are attached to the canoe prow on a wooden backing. This is a classic Itmul object which is regularly represented in most major books on New Guinea and Oceanic art (see for example: Nicholas Thomas' Oceanic Art illustration 44, page 47 for an other Iatmul example in situ, Jean Guiart's The Arts of the South Pacific illustration 97 on page 131 for a Middle Sepik example from Kaminimbit and Kaeppler, Kaufmann & Newton Oceanic Art illustration 231, page 349 for an example from East Sepik Province).  It measures 18 1/2" (47.5cm) high by 12 3/4" (32.5cm) wide. Please note that the filling is the right eye has been lost during the time it was in service on the splashboard. It is estimated to be 20 to 30+ years old. It is being offered at NO RESERVE.
