Description: On offer is an especially fine, old ancestor figure — or singiti — from the Hemba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Hemba produce the singiti statues as homages to, & literal & spiritual representations of, their ancestors. The carved wood sculptures are reverently protected in special huts where they may receive worship & offerings. Carved from heavy, dense wood, this handsome fellow possesses a spirit of dignity, composure, & confidence. His form is classic in every respect — swept-back coiffure, accentuated with carved motifs; almond-shaped eyes; strong nose-line & beautiful lips; angular jaw-line highlighted by an incised beard; both hands resting on an enlarged stomach; & support provided by somewhat stocky legs, with feet firmly planted on a round base. With a wonderful old patina, this outstanding sculpture shows excellent age-related wear. Despite some imperfections in the wood, including a few dry age-cracks, the statue is in very good overall condition. Imposing display.
