Description
tuxedozen store Dramatic LARGE Antique FIJI KAVA BOWL Six Legs Description:PLEASE READ THE COMPLETE DESCRIPTION IN THIS LISTING, SEE ALL PHOTOS, AND READ ALL INFORMATION REGARDING MY AUCTIONS BEFORE BIDDING. THANK YOU!!This is a large and beautiful Kava bowl, most likely Fijian, though similar bowls are found in Tonga and Samoa. It measures 18 1/4" to 18 3/8" in diameter and stands 8 1/2" high, which is higher than typical bowls of this size. There is a lug handle with a pierced hole for hanging. The interior of the bowl is very dark, with remnants of Kava bloom, so it clearly was utilized for kava ceremonies. The legs and bottom are darkened, but do not have the heavy patina of the interior. The legs are tapered, and the lip is nicely shaped, becoming quite thin at the edge. Adze marks are evident on the legs and bottom of the bowl. Condition: there is a break, which has been badly reglued, and two cracks extend into the body of the bowl from this repaired area. There is also a reglued edge, and some minor chips along lip of bowl; needs professional restoration to properly repair break and stabilize cracks. Numerous photos are included, showing details of patina, break, surface, etc. (supersizing the images makes details clearer). It is always hard to date these bowls without a clear provenance, but this one is definitely early 20th century, possibly 19th. This is a very fine Kava bowl, with beautiful proportions and scale, and would enhance any good collection of Oceanic, Polynesia, Tribal arts.
