Description
Fante standing female figure, African carvingType of Object: SculptureEthnic Group: FanteCountry of Origin: GhanaMaterials: Wood, stain and pigmentsApproximate Age: Mid twentieth centuryDimensions: Height is 19.5 inchesOverall Condition: Excellent. Lots of encrustations all over her bodyDamage, Repair: stainAdditional Information: When Europeans first came to the area known as the Gold Coast (present-day Ghana) in the late 1400’s they met the people known as the Fante who are members of a larger culture and language group known as the Akan that includes among others the well-known Asante. This interestingly carved standing female figure was probably part of a grouping of figures serving in a shrine dedicated to fertility. Her very expressive hands support her distended abdomen with extended navel possibly indicating a pregnant woman. Whatever her role in Fante society she is a beautifully sculpted figure with a skillfully carved face and hairstyle. The rings around her neck represent her health and well-being. The carved rings around her knees would have had strings of beads wrapped around them. The well worn surface of figure shows long use.Recommended Reading: Kerchache's ART OF AFRICAI have examined this piece and agree with the descriptionNiangi Batulukisi, Ph.D. **022042** All content, including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc., 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers!
