Description
FINE AND RARE VANUATU DANCE MASK. EARLY 20TH CENTURY. Originating from either Vao or Atchin Island off the coast of northern Malekula, offered is rare form of painted dance mask. The whimsical face is typical of the region and is reminiscent of the unique faces traditionally rendered on the massive ironwood slit drums of the islands. This mask is fresh to the market, having remained in an important European collection since it was collected in the field prior to 1955. The mask measures 11 1/2 inches (29 cm.) in height and features a dry oxidized patina with some regions of glossy wear on the face. There are remnants of blue, green, and red native pigments. The blue pigment, called Rickett's Blue, is an early trade pigment that was brought by European traders and was highly prized by the natives of Vanuatu in the early 20th century. There also appears to be traces of an abstract design on the forehead painted in white lime. A fine museum mount crafted from exotic bubinga hardwood is included with this remarkable mask. This is a private auction to safeguard and guarantee bidder / buyer anonymity. The successful bidder pays only actual shipping charges. No additional handling or packaging charges will be incurred. Please e-mail me with any question at edward_art@swbell.net or to receive a notice of upcoming auctions.
