Description
Absolutely stunning and historically significant Sioux traditional soft cradle made of native-tanned buffalo? hide, heavily decorated with parallel stripes of dyed porcupine quillwork (in red and greenish-blue quills) and beaded rolled edge in greasy yellow and navy blue beads, sinew-sewn. Red-dyed chicken feathers attached at intervals. The upper hide section of the cradle measures approx 34 inches in width, 10 inches in depth (as viewed), and is surmounted by a panel of quilled rawhide slats - 6 inches long by 4 1/2 inches wide. There is a 9-inch hide fringe attached to the apex of the quilled panel. The lower section (shown folded in first picture) is made of red woollen cloth, lined with floral patterned cotton fabric. Fine, original, untouched, museum quality condition. Please note - this is the REAL DEAL, not a reproduction! Dating circa 1870, the cradle comes with some rather fascinating provenance. Until recently, it formed part of a UK private collection and, prior to that, was in the possession of a Northern Cheyenne family from Lame Deer Reservation, Montana. For many years, it was also part of a famous Midwest U.S. museum collection. Full provenance details will be supplied to the eventual buyer. LIFETIME GUARANTEED to be a genuine Native American antique ! If this item does not sell, it will not be relisted! Email for further information or more photographs if required! Payment by Paypal or personal cheque (UK buyers only). Thank you for looking!
