Description
A recently discovered 18th century frontiersman axe. Often referred to as hammer pole tomahawk. I believe this to be an 18th century frontiersman belt axe made by one of the early Kentucky rifle makers. This is a very hard item to find with period handle. The head of the axe is 4 1/2" wide at the double flared blade end and 6 1/2" tall, and is 16 3/4" overall with handle. The surface of the axe is very sharp with original coloring and no deep pitting. The draw file marks from the original finishing are still evident. The handle also shows original color oxidation and is constructed of ash. Similar style pole or hammer axe have been excavated in mid 18th century fortifications. I do not believe this to be an Indian Trade Axe as it is not a massed produced form but a custom one of a kind axe. Powered by eBay Turbo ListerThe free listing tool.
