Description
This is a spectacular example of a Bontok presentation dipper given to Mrs. Maude Humphreys by an Episcopalian missionary in the 1920's. and then given to the Tampa Museum of Art from whence it was de-accessioned privately. Measures 30 1/2" tall x about 6 3/4" across the relief carved bowl. Upon doing more research, it looks to me to be an example of Bontok work The carving is in deep relief and very well done. Look closely at the ancestors carved as the subject of the long handle. They are beautifully and sensitively carved and each face is a little bit different. The creatures carved on the bowl are also in relief and represent a large crab, a lizard, a snake and another snake trying to SWALLOW a human! The overall color is a warm nut brown with the handle having a more polished surface. All carved from one piece of wood, the species, however, I am unfamiliar with. I've owned a number of Oceanic items but this is one of the most interesting and certainly more impressive examples. The old note is on the kind of paper early 20th century passenger luggage tags were made of - a heavy manila type stock. Condition is very good with an intact fracture midway up the anthropomorphic handle. Here is an opportunity to own a wonderful object from a culture that only recently stopped its head hunting practices, although research indicates that they still practice revenge killings. There are a number of tribes who fall under the Igorot umbrella as Igorot is actually a language group. Study the photos and any questions will be answered asap. Any further info on this piece would be appreciatively received. GOOD LUCK!  NOTE: I have added pictures of where the handle joins the bowl and of the top of the handle.
