    MAGNIFICENT Marquesas Islands Wooden Cannibal Bowl RARE       Click to view supersized image This is a magnificent, RARE, original antique museum quality MARQUESAS ISLANDS WOODEN BOWL USED AT CANNIBAL FEASTS, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia.   This spectacular bowl is carved of wood and measures 11” across x 4” deep. It is in excellent original antique condition with signs of wear and use and with a rich, dark patina. PROVENANCE: ex collection Robert Lewis Stevenson, purchased from the Robert Lewis Stevenson sale at the Anderson Galleries, New York, Part II, January 25, 1915, lot 173, by William Holland Samson. According to catalogue notes: “This bowl was given to Stevenson in the Marquesas and used by him at Vailima”. Villa Vailima, Samoa, was R.L.Stevenson's home. The author of “Treasure Island" and "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", Stevenson spent the final part of his life in Samoa. Samoans called him "Tusitala" ("Teller of Tales"). He died on 3rd December 1894, at the age of only 44, and was buried at the summit of Mount Vaea. Nine pages of documentation from the estate of Katherine D.
