Description
Papua New Guinea MAI SHELL NECKLACE TRIBAL USE COLLECTED IN MADANG This graduated shell necklace is made from twine, wire and shells. The strand is approx. 40cm long. 67 shaped shells. This is an exquisite example with genuine tribal use. From the Chana Hodgson Private collection Chana Hodgson is an Argentine born artist who has exhibited in Australia and South America. In 2003 – 04 with her husband Chana lived in Kokopo, the capital of New Britain Province. During this period she had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout Papua New Guinea and became interested in collecting local art and cultural objects. As an artist she was very interested in visiting villages and sketching her encounters. The locals were intrigued with her work and shared with her their art and artefacts. This led to Chana collecting a wide and varied collection with many highly collectable pieces all with tribal use. Much of the collection has been assembled from the island regions including works from the Sepik regions. Her collecting interests even extended to the Tari and Wahgi Valleys of the PNG Highlands. We will be listing selected items from the Chana Hodgson Collection over the coming weeks.
