Description
SUPERB 19TH CENTURY TONGAN KALI LALONI NECKREST. Originally purchased from an English private collection, offered is a fine and early Tongan neckrest referred to as a kali laloni, or chief's neckrest. According to the Tongan scholar Keith St.Cartmail, these particular neckrests with the attached legs were the exclusive property of village chiefs and were not to be touched by other members of the family or village. The neckrest measures 20 1/2 inches (52 cm.) in length and the surface indicates that the neckrest was finished with coral rasping. The neckrest has an overall dry patina, but the central portion of the neckrest which supported the neck, has developed a glossy worn patina. The neckrest is in fine condition and there is no restoration evident. The legs are secured via sennit fiber and the main body of the neckrest has a lovely arched form. Presented is another opportunity for bidders. This is a private auction to safeguard and guarantee bidder / buyer anonymity. The successful bidder pays only actual shipping charges. No additional handling or packaging charges will be incurred. Please e-mail me with any question at edward_art@swbell.net or to receive a notice of upcoming auctions. Also, please review and consider my other current outstanding auctions which include a fine and rare Vanuatu dance mask, a magnificent 18th c. Tahitian poi pounder, an exquisite New Guinea pounder, a rare and beautiful Niue Island fighting club, and a distinctive Asmat nose ornament.
