Overall Condition: Good Damage, Repair: None. Additional Information: The Yaka people live in the southwest region of the Democratic Republic of Congo localized in the Kwango-Kwilu river basin. They have been influenced in their art by their more populous and well-known neighbors the Suku, Congo, Holo and Teke. The art of the Suku and Yaka often share similarities for as early as the Seventeenth century the Suku were already settled in the region with the Yaka moving into the area slightly later. As a result the sculptures of both Suku and Yaka are often cross-referenced as they share certain stylistic and cultural uses of their masks and figures. Among the Yaka shrines are built for a number of functions including the initiation of young boys, in shrines called n-kanda where figures were given over to the idea of sexuality and fertility. Shrines with sculptures such as Mbwoolo, Koshi, Mambi, etc.  were also established to assure success in hunting and some figures were used by diviners as they sought to counteract the forces of witchcraft and to heal.
